Description:
M99 is a face-on spiral galaxy in the Virgo Cluster.   Long exposure photographs show two prominent spiral arms that can be seen visually in large telescopes.   Smaller telescopes show a large spherical halo with a bright core but other detail is difficult to discern.   M99 is very asymmetric, possibly due to a past encounter with another galaxy.   It has the largest recorded velocity of any Messier object, moving away from us at 2300 km/s.
