Description:
M88 is a spiral galaxy similar in appearance to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), that lies in the galaxy rich Virgo Cluster.   In a small telescope it appears as a faint elongated glow with a close pair of 12th magnitude stars.   A larger instrument and a dark sky reveal spiral structure and dark lanes.   A supernova was observed in M88 in 1999.
