M74 is an open-face spiral galaxy that looks quite remarkable in long exposure images.
However, due to its low surface brightness,
M74 is one of the more challenging Messier objects to observe visually.
On a good night with the help of averted vision,
M74 is seen as a dim smudge brightening towards the center.
M74 may form a physical group with NGC 660 and several other small galaxies.
