A nearby cluster whose classification was in question for some time.
It seemed too sparse to be a globular cluster and too dense to be an open cluster.
Today we know that M71 is a globular cluster which only appears loosely aggregated
because it is a mere 13,000 light years from us.
At moderate magnification it appears as a loose and elongated globular cluster
or a very dense open cluster with faint nebulosity in the background.
Higher magnification resolves this cluster quite well.
Three stars form a triangle that frames M71.
