M48 is one of the "missing" Messier objects.
Observers were unable to find any object at the coordinates Messier
entered for this object in his catalog.
It is now believed that Messier made a mistake in calculating his celestial coordinates,
and the object he observed was the open cluster NGC 2548.
This cluster is a loose collection of around 80 stars visible to the unaided eye
and best seen in binoculars or under low power in telescopes.
The stars appear to be of similar brightness and seem to form an arrowhead type pattern.
