Description:
Perhaps the worst Messier object!   A double star surrounded by a nebula had been erroneously recorded in this region by astronomer Johannes Hevelius.   Although Messier found only a double star and no nebula, he still entered it in his catalog.   M40 is in the bowl of the Big Dipper, and is simply two 9th magnitude stars separated by 47'.
