M24 is a "window into the Milky Way",
forming a rich portion of the Sagittarius spiral arm.
Few objects can match its visual majesty when viewed in binoculars or
in telescopes under low power.
Occupying a 1° × 2° area in the sky,
this exceptionally dense stellar region contains a superb example of a Barnard Dark Nebula
(Barnard 92) and an open cluster (NGC 6603).
The combination of bright stars,
darker areas and faint nebulous glows adds to the visual impact and
complexity of this remarkable stellar city.
