Description:
M109 is a barred spiral galaxy just to the side of the star Phecda in the Big Dipper's bowl.   A small telescope reveals a faint elongated halo with a small bright core.   A little over 1° south of M109 lies NGC 3953, a 10th magnitude barred spiral galaxy similar to M109.   M109 is a member of the Ursa Major cluster, a cluster of at least 80 galaxies.
