M109 is a barred spiral galaxy just to the side of the star Phecda in the Big Dipper's bowl.
A small telescope reveals a faint elongated halo with a small bright core.
A little over 1° south of M109 lies NGC 3953,
a 10th magnitude barred spiral galaxy similar to M109.
M109 is a member of the Ursa Major cluster, a cluster of at least 80 galaxies.
