Description:
A barred spiral galaxy in the Virgo Cluster.   Scanning this region with binoculars is a real joy as the field of view is filled with the faint fuzzes of many galaxies.   Under low power in a telescope, M58 shares the same field as M59 and M60, two elliptical galaxies.   M58 brightens towards the nucleus with a diffuse outer envelope.   A larger telescope and higher magnification begins to reveal subtle detail including spiral arms and dark lanes.
