Description:
A bright elliptical galaxy located near the center of the Virgo cluster.   Best seen in a telescope, this galaxy presents a bright core surrounded by a fainter diffuse halo.   This elliptical is distinctly non-circular.   A very faint 12.5 magnitude star can be seen in the east and adds to the aesthetic view.   M49 is encircled by a layer of extremely hot gas.   This gas is at a temperature of 10 million °C and emits a large amount of X-ray radiation.
