| An often-overlooked companion of M42, M43 is really part of the same nebula separated by a dark gas lane. It is a large and bright emission nebula excited by the 8th magnitude variable star ν Orionis. Faint arcs of nebulosity and dark lanes are visible in a small telescope. | |||||||||||
