Description:
A bright, globular cluster in Ophiucus, M19 is very close (3-5 kly) to the center of the Milky Way.   M19 is the most elliptical globular cluster known, with twice as many stars through its major axis as through its minor axis.   This may be due to gravitational interaction with the galactic center or it may be an optical illusion caused by an obscuring dust lane.   Through binoculars, M19 appears as an unresolved haze.   In a telescope, a few stars can be resolved around the periphery of the halo.
