A pretty open cluster with about 40 members surrounded by fainter background stars in the band of the Milky Way.   M18 is quite a young cluster, only 30 million years old.   In binoculars, M18 can be seen in the same field as M16, M17 and M24.   Although not as visually remarkable as its neighbors, M18 deserves close inspection.
